EYESIGHT TESTING
A sight test checks whether you need glasses or contact lenses to improve your vision. Having good vision increases your independence and can improve your well-being. But a sight test is also an important eye-health check, and can sometimes detect signs of underlying general health conditions, such as diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Everyone should have a sight test every two years, or more often if your optometrist recommends it.
1. We offer NHS and private eye care.
2. You qualify for an NHS sight test if you:
Are aged 60 or over
Are registered as partially sighted or blind
Have diabetes
Have glaucoma or been told by an ophthalmologist (eye doctor) that you're at risk of glaucoma or:
Are 40 or over and have a parent, brother, sister, son or daughter who has been diagnosed with glaucoma
3. You are entitled to an NHS sight test, and may also get an NHS voucher towards the cost of glasses or contact lenses, if you:
Are under 16, or under 19 and in full-time education
Have been prescribed complex lenses and are eligible for a 'complex lens voucher' (your optometrist can tell you more about this)
There may be an additional charge for these tests.

2. MPOD Macula pigment screener - MPOD enables the early detection of patients at risk of age-related macula degeneration (AMD) - the leading cause of vision loss in people over 50 worldwide. Low macula pigment is a significant and modifiable risk factor for AMD. Once detected, macula pigment can be managed through changes to diet and lifestyle which can reduce the risk of developing AMD.
3. Dry Eye assessment
'Dry eye' can affect people of any age and is an increasing problem in the modern world as screen use, contact lens wear, medication and face masks can all make the problem worse. Infrared Meibography is a technique which allows us to the evaluate the eyelid meibomium glands - this is where most dry eye issues begin.
4. Intuitive Colour overlays and Wilkins rate of reading test - Some people benefit from the use of coloured overlays when reading. In some cases this can help improve reading speed, reduce visual discomfort and glare improving problems caused by dyslexia and migraine.
Home Eye Examinations.
If you cannot get to the optician on your own because of a disability we may be able to visit you at home.
We have portable equipment which we can bring to your home, along with a range of spectacle frames for you to browse. We can often adjust and repair your glasses at home. We can adapt the eye test to meet your needs eg, if you are confined to bed or have difficulty communicating, learning difficulties or dementia.
If you are eligible for an NHS sight test you would also qualify for an NHS domiciliary visit if you cannot attend the practice due to disability.
On a home visit we can carry out most of the tests you would expect to have if you attended the practice, including assessing your distance and near vision, measuring your eyes pressures for glaucoma, checking the health of the eyes and taking photographs of the retina.
Please call the practice if you would like to find out any further information about having an eye examination at home.
